I'm not saying the information doesn't come from engineers. I'm saying they don't write it and it is not intended for them. It is written by technical writers for service technicians. If you're lucky, the company produces the manual in house and it is reasonably well done. Many companies outsource their service manual production, and the results can be a challenge to use.
Three examples:
My 1992 Suzuki Katana factory service manual. Exceptional reference. I tore down the motor and rebuilt it with the FSM alone. Great diagrams and pictures. Clear sequential instructions. Tool lists, part numbers, torque specs. All there.
My 2001 Triumph Sprint ST/RS service manual. Terrible. Incomplete. Poor instructions. No diagrams or pictures. Issued updates and corrections to erroneous information from first publication. Sent from a third party publisher. Utter Garbage.
1993 Nissan 300ZX FSM. Somewhere in the middle of the above. Tool lists, torque specs and instructions, but not necessarily detailed instructions. Diagrams are OK, many are confusing (vaccuum galleries especially). Occasional bits of comedy. Read the turbo replacement section for a good laugh. Even the Nissan Master Tech. I know quite well has his favorite improbable bits. I use tt.net printed write-ups in conjunction with the manual for any projects I do, the combination works well.
They are intended for service and repair, can vary in quality and detail, and are by no means a full engineered analysis of the vehicle or its parts.
